Type 2 Diabetes Screening and Cardiovascular Risk Assessment

Type 2 Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic condition characterized by high blood sugar (glucose) levels. It occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin, has stopped producing enough insulin, or is unable to use insulin properly.

There are  three main types of diabetes:

  • type 1 diabetes;
  • type 2 diabetes;
  • gestational diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. It is often associated with:

  • a family history of the disease;
  • being overweight;
  • an unhealthy diet;
  • lack of physical activity;
  • advancing age.

In type 2 diabetes, insulin does not work as well. Treatment involves adopting a healthy diet and engaging in regular physical activity. Depending on the severity, it is often necessary to take certain medications, either in pill form or by injection (including insulin).

Cardiovascular Risk

Dyslipidemia (cholesterol) and high blood pressure are cardiovascular diseases.

To learn more about these cardiovascular diseases, see the pages on Dyslipidemia (cholesterol) and High Blood Pressure.

Screening

Screening is intended for individuals who have not been diagnosed with prediabetes, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or high blood pressure and are not currently being treated for any of these conditions.

Screening is available for individuals aged 18 to 75.
