Vaccination against flu (influenza)

Influenza is a respiratory virus infection that can lead to severe complications, especially in vulnerable individuals.

Vaccination helps prevent flu-related complications and hospitalizations, particularly in at-risk people. It stimulates the production of antibodies, which decrease over time, especially in older adults.

Vaccines are updated annually, based on the characteristics of predicted viral strains.

Who can receive the flu vaccine

The flu vaccine is offered free of charge to anyone over the age of 6 months who requests it for themselves or for a child in their care.

The vaccine is strongly recommended for those who are at higher risk for complications, including:

  • People over the age of 65
  • People over the age of 6 months who have  certain chronic diseases
  • People of any age living in residential and long-term care centres (CHSLDs) and in intermediate resources
  • Pregnant women:

The vaccine is also recommended for anyone likely to transmit the flu to those who are more vulnerable to complications from the flu, including:

  • Family members living in the same household as a child younger than 6 months
  • Family members living in the same household as someone who is over the age of 75, or who has certain chronic diseases, or who is pregnant
  • Informal caregivers for residents in CHSLDs or intermediate resources, or someone who is over the age of 75, or who has certain chronic diseases, or is pregnant
