Cervical cancer develops in the narrow part of the cervix that connects the uterus to the vagina. Almost all cases of cervical cancer are caused by an infection of the cervix with certain types of
human papillomavirus (HPV), known as high-risk HPV types. When the infection does not clear up on its own after several years, the virus can infect multiple cells and cause abnormalities on the cervix, known as precancerous lesions. However, some of these lesions may progress to cancer.
The main risk factor for cervical cancer is infection with a high-risk HPV type. Several factors influence the risk of becoming infected with HPV or the body’s ability to clear the infection. Factors that increase the risk of infection include sexual behaviors that put a person at risk of exposure to sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections (STBBI).
Vaccination
The best way to reduce the risk of developing and dying from cervical cancer is vaccination. In Quebec, two HPV vaccines are available free of charge to
eligible individuals. Those who are not eligible can also get vaccinated, but must pay for the vaccines. For more information, visit the page on
vaccines against human papillomavirus (HPV) infections.
Screening
The goal of cervical cancer screening is to prevent the onset of this cancer and to reduce mortality and related complications. This screening detects precancerous lesions or cancer at an early stage, before symptoms appear, thereby increasing the chances of a cure.
Screening with an
HPV test aims to detect the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV infection occurs before abnormal cells or precancerous lesions develop.
Screening is available for women ages 25 through 65.
