Meet Sylvain Lecours, Nurse Clinician, JGH's Medical-Surgical ICU

Meet Sylvain Lecours, an ICU nurse at the Jewish General Hospital. To meet him, you probably wouldn’t know that nursing wasn’t his first career. Actually he started his work life as a computer science major  Cégep de Sherbrooke and worked as an analyst/programmer and Network Administrator before realizing something was missing.

He started volunteering at the JGH in the Emergency Department in 2003. “I needed to work with people instead of machines all the time.”

He loved volunteering so much he studied to be a PAB, while still working at his IT job. He continued his studies, this time focusing on nursing, which he graduated from in 2007.

As a nurse at the Jewish, he began in cardiac and neuro surgery, and later applied to work in the ICU and he’s been there ever since.

“When I was a volunteer and to this day, I really feel that the JGH was and is compatible with my personal values and way of caring for the patients and their loved ones. I see the JGH as my hospital, I feel at home here. When I was in nursing school, I did my internships in other centres and I never felt the connection that I felt here.”

“An ICU nurse specializes in handling the unexpected. You have to be able to adapt to an unforeseen situation and change the immediate care plan accordingly. What I like the most here is that we work together. You are never alone when the situation gets tough and things get crazy, we get together and help each other. We are a big family.”

Working part-time, he balanced his studied Health Sciences, as Unit Coordinator. Throughout his education, Michael continued designing his career with us. While studying nursing sciences at L’Université de Sherbrooke, he landed a part time job with our Human Resources Department as a Recall Agent. He’d travel back and forth between Sherbrooke and Montreal, on a weekly basis, simply because he loved working at the JGH.

Upon graduating, Michael worked a few years in Sherbrooke as a nurse but the call of the JGH was strong and he was determined to make his way back so he could pursue his nursing career with us. In 2016, Michael became a nurse in our Emergency Department.

“When you work at the JGH, you are constantly encouraged by your peers. The learning environment is so stimulating that you simply want to better yourself every day and as a nurse, that is so important. We are so well surrounded. The environment of the JGH simpl
